Here are a few things that homeowners can do to help secure their roofs and homes in the event of an upcoming storm:
• Trim all trees away from the roof – we recommend you hire a licensed & insured professional for this.
• Clean all debris from roof & gutters – this will help prevent water from backing up & entering the building.
• Check for rotted wood – visually inspect all soffit & fascia boards, check roof deck for soft spots. Rotted wood in these areas can compromise the fasteners used to hold the eave metal & therefore allow the wind to get into the eaves & shear off the roof materials. Note – we want to emphasize all inspections should be visual only & we never recommend a homeowner remove any roofing components or accessories to examine other areas.
• Visually inspect for areas in need of repairs:
- Visually inspect tile roofs for missing roof tiles – these should be replaced to prevent water intrusion.
- Visually inspect metal panel roof systems – make sure all panels are secure & there are no missing or rusted fasteners.
- Replace any missing or damaged shingles – again this is to prevent water intrusion.
- Flat roofs also need to be visually inspected – look for open seams & punctures in the membrane. These areas should be patched to prevent water intrusion.
- Check all vents, skylights & roof top equipment – replace rusted or missing fasteners, replace loose or deteriorated vents.
- Make sure all eave metal is securely fastened – reseal if necessary.
• We suggest you purchase a tarp – in case your roof is damaged in a storm, the faster it can be covered the less damage to the interior of the home. Roofing companies do not usually stock an abundance of tarps.
