How To Detect A Roof Leak

Finding a leak is one of the hardest parts of fixing a roof leak. The actual spot of the roof leak is difficult to find because water may enter the roof in one place and run down to another place before it starts leaking into the ceiling. The goal is to find the leak to prevent having to buy a new roof.

Signs Your Roof May Be Bad

  • Shingles are missing or damaged

  • Water stains on the ceiling or walls

The easiest way to spot the leak is to go up in your attic on a rainy day. Water will reflect light, so bring a flashlight along. If you don’t want to wait for a rainy day, try bringing the garden hose upon the roof. Run the water over the place where you think the leak might be located. Be sure to smart in a small area. Have a helper stationed in the attic with a flashlight looking for moisture. The water will reflect the light and make it easier to see.

Once you locate the source of the water, mark the area and have a helper tap on the interior mark while you pinpoint the exteriorlocation on the roof. You can then apply roofing cement or new shingles as needed. However, your safety is important to us, you could leave it to the experts!  AWS Roofing has over 40 years of experience and they can do these tasks quickly and efficiently. If you don't have an attic or can't find the leak, check these places for moisture or damage.
