The History Of Roofing

What is roofing, and where did it come from? By definition, a roof is “a covering of the top of a building, which serves to protect against rain, snow, sunlight, wind, and extremes of temperature.”

Roofing has been present in the human story since the beginning of recorded history and even before recorded history, dating back to 40,000 BC with people we would now refer to as the call the caveman.

We often look to fire as what led to humanity’s development, but it was the roof that kept the fire from going out when it rained. If it wasn’t for roofing, society itself might have never formed.

In fact, the industry of roofing is one of the oldest professions in history. Roofing was one of the greatest innovations in the story of humankind. Of course, over time, roofs began to advance and become better. In this article, we will be looking at the history of roofing up until today.

History Of Roofing

The first use of what we would recognize as a roofing tile first came around in 10,000 BC. These roofs were the first to have interlocking tiles composed of clay.

What became one of the first building laws was in Hammurabi’s code in which it stated: “If a builder builds a house for someone and does not construct it properly, and the house which he built falls in and kills its owner, then that builder shall be put to death.”

Although the punishment may seem harsh, it was a historical development of what would become the building and safety standards.

The next big step in the history of roofing was the use of slate and red-tile roofing materials for roofs during the Roman age.

While tile was present in roofing much earlier, the Romans were one of the first to use mathematics in their architecture, which allowed civilizations to build “structurally sound” roofs for masses of people, leading to the development of the first western cities.

Fast forward to 735 AD when the next giant leap in roofing came with thatch roofs which were made from woven trees and leaves.

Around 1000 AD, wood shingles were first developed and used for roofing material.

However, wood shingles were used primarily until the 1800s, when roofers realized how easily wood shingles could catch fire.

Then in the early 1900s, Henry Reynolds invented the asphalt roof, which changed the roofing industry forever.

Finally, in the 1970s, the development of technology led to the development of glass fiber, which could be stretched without breaking.
