Hail Damage: Roof Inspection Guide

by | May 18, 2022 | Roof Inspection

Experiencing a hailstorm can be quite scary – not to mention the damage it can cause to your property. According the Insurance Information Institute, hail-related insurance losses between 2000 and 2019 averaged between $8 and $14 billion a year. That’s a lot of hail damage! If you have recently experienced a hail storm, you may want to check out potential damage for yourself prior to calling in professionals. Read on to learn more about what we recommend for inspecting your home for hail damage post-storm.

How To Look For Hail Damage

The first thing to do when assessing hail damage is to look for damage within the home. Severe hail damage can often be identified within the home. Water damage that was not previously there can indicate a roof being damaged by a storm. We will cover more indicators of hail damage later.

In addition to looking around inside, you can also walk the perimeter of the home. This will help you safely identify any major issues. It is not recommended for non-professionals to get on the roof after a hailstorm, as more damage could occur resulting in injury for you. When performing this inspection, take pictures and record what you see. This will help when and if you decide to file for insurance claims.

What Does Hail Damage Look Like?

Though it can vary, hail damage has a few telling signs on a roof. Some of these signs include:

Missing Shingles

When a few or many shingles are missing from the roof, this can be an indicator that hail damage has impacted your roof and action is needed. The shingles can be loose or totally missing.

Shingle Granules

Hail impact also can affect the outermost layer on asphalt shingles. This protective layer can be loosened and can get washed down the gutter, where you will likely find it during a self-inspection.

Damaged Vent Caps or Gutters

Check any vent caps and gutters for damage. Are there dents or cracks? These can indicate severe storm damage.

Damage to Surrounding Objects

Always check the objects near your home’s roof for damage, as well. Things that are on the ground level, such as siding or a car, can indicate the severity of a storm. This can often give you a clue as to whether your roof will have been affected.
